Katarina Wit began skating at five years old. Her talent soon became obvious, and she gained entry to a private school that caters for kids with a flair for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Here she first saw their trainer Jutta M ller. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point onwards she was dominating the competition. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close race to claim the women's figure skating gold medal. In a more competitive competition, the following year, Witt took home the gold medal. Free skaters lost however, she took home the gold medal for the mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt became the women's first multiple winner in figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes as an acting career, however she returned to figure skating in order to compete during her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win the medal. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
